Module Breakdown – Britain: From Blitz to Brexit

Welcome to another module breakdown blog post! So far, I have done 4 posts in this little series on my blog. Essentially, I break down each module and look at it in detail so if you are doing this module, or something very similar, then you know what to expect!

You can find my previous module breakdown posts here:

Year 1 Modules

Today’s post is on my second Politics module: Britain: From Blitz to Brexit. Let’s get to it!

Content

Britain: From Blitz to Brexit for me was a political history module. We looked at post-war Britain up until Brexit. Some of the topics we looked at include: the Northern Ireland Troubles, War and Appeasement, and the origins of Brexit. We also looked at significant political figures in post-war Britain, such as Churchill, Blair and Thatcher.

Lectures

Lectures happened twice a week for this module. Each lecture was 1 hour long and focused on a specific topic, like the Northern Ireland troubles as an example. They were very representative of what you would expect from a university lecture in terms of little to no interaction.

All of the lectures took place on campus. This was similar to my politics module I did in the first semester. There wasn’t an option to view the lectures live online but they were available online afterwards.

Seminars

Seminars happened once a week, with each one being an hour long. Each seminar focused on a topic somewhat similar to topics discussed in the lectures. I actually really enjoyed the seminars for this module. My seminar leader was an absolute angel and the topics we discussed were so interesting. It certainly made for interesting debates!

Assessments

In this module, I had 3 assessments. The first one was a political history blog book review. We had to pick a scholarly book and review it. I really enjoyed doing this because providing you find the correct sort of book in terms of being on a topic that interests you, it felt like I was writing a review in my reading journal.

The next assignment was an audio presentation. We had to create a 5 minute powerpoint recording on a significant political figure in post-war Britain. We had to explain why they were significant and use historians to back up our point. I also really enjoyed this assignment and found the research part so interesting.

The final assessment was an end of module exam. There were 2 questions we had to answer, one on a broad theme of post-war Britain and one which was more specific. The exam was okay for me which I appreciated.

Overall Thoughts

I enjoyed this module. Despite it being a lot different to what I was initially expecting, I still enjoyed learning new things.

Thank you for reading.

Beth
