Blogmas Day 21: 11 True Crime Documentaries to Watch on Netflix

Welcome to another blogmas post. Today’s post is going to be about true crime documentaries on Netflix. As a society, there is a growing obsession with true crime content. From true crime YouTuber and true crime TikTok’s to documentaries and channels purely dedicated to true crime, it’s easy to see why this has happened.

Over the years, there have been some brilliant and insightful documentaries on Netflix to do with true crime. Today, I want to recommend 11 to you. These are all documentaries I’ve watched myself, and I find them all fascinating and intriguing. Let’s get to it.

The Ripper

The Ripper is a documentary series looking at the case of the Yorkshire Ripper. What I like about this is it goes into detail on the police investigation like any other documentary, but it also explores the social aspect and the reaction from the people closely involved.

Making a Murderer

Making a Murderer is probably the first true crime documentary I ever watched. It tells the story of a man who originally had a wrongful conviction which he served time in prison for. He was later charged and convicted of murdering a different person.

The Phantom

This documentary details the case of a man sentenced to death for the robbery and murder of a woman in work in Texas. It transpires in the documentary that there is a very high chance the man did not commit the crime. Unfortunately, he was killed before this investigation took place. This one has stuck with me ever since I watched it in November. I found it absolutely heartbreaking.

Girl in the Picture

This documentary is centred around a young woman who died after a suspicious hit-and-run accident. This woman went by various names throughout her life, so the documentary explores the investigation into finding out her true identity.

I am a Killer

I am a Killer is a documentary series, with each episode focused on interviewing a death-row inmate. This is a fascinating series in which you really get to see the psyche of an individual and whether they feel any remorse.

Out of Thin Air

This documentary is centred around false confessions. In particular, it is focused on a case in Iceland, known as the Reykjavik Confessions. 6 people were convicted of the murders of 2 men, purely on the basis of the confessions given by the defendants. There were no bodies, witnesses or forensic evidence.

The Confession Killer

This is a documentary series focused on Henry Lee Lucas, a serial killer. Lucas confessed to a large amount of murders whilst incarcerated. However, it transpired that many of the murders Lucas confessed too were not of his doing.

Abducted in Plain Sight

This documentary tells the story of a child who was abducted by her neighbour on two occasions. This is a fascinating watch because it feels like you’re watching something that’s fictional. It is insane and terrifying to think this is something that truly happened.

The Staircase

The Staircase is a documentary series focusing on the the Kathleen Peterson case. Kathleen was a woman who died in an incident at home. Suspicion started to arise with her husband, Michael and this documentary is from his perspective.

Why did you Kill Me?

This documentary focuses on a family and their use of social media to track down those involved in the murder of their family member.

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

This documentary series focuses on the serial killer, Ted Bundy. The documentary features clips of him discussing his crimes, making it a horrific viewing.

And that’s it. Thank you for reading and I will see you tomorrow for another blogmas post.
