Module Breakdown – Equity & Trusts

Welcome to another module breakdown blog post! So far, I have done 8 posts in this little series on my blog. Essentially, I break down each module and look at it in detail so if you are doing this module, or something very similar, then you know what to expect!

You can find my previous module breakdown posts here:

This module breakdown post is on Equity and Trusts! Without further ado, let’s get to it!

Content

Equity and Trusts is pretty much self-explanatory. The module explores equitable principles and the importance, creation and use of a trust. Some of the specific topics we looked at were Charitable Trusts, Resulting Trusts, and Fiduciary Duties to name a few.

Lectures

Lectures for Equity and Trusts occurred two times a week and were two hours in length. Each lecture focused on one particular topic, but sometimes it did overlap into another lecture depending on how vast the topic was. These lectures were very typical of your average university lecture, in terms of not being very interactive.

Tutorials

In terms of tutorials, I actually had a different person leading them. I don’t think I’ve explained this before, but as I go to Bangor University in North Wales, there are Welsh-speaking tutorials for students who would prefer to have their content in Welsh. Unfortunately, this is only an option for tutorials and not lectures but nonetheless, this is what happens at Bangor. My lecturer spoke welsh, so he took the Welsh-speaking tutorials, and the English-speaking tutorials were took by a solicitor, which was fascinating.

The tutorials were like other tutorials from different modules. There was a lot of preparation involved, with different essay and problem questions that we could attempt or plan. I find tutorials can be more useful than lectures, so I always make sure to attend these.

Assessments

There were two assessments I had to do for Equity and Trusts. I had an essay and an exam, with the essay being worth 40% of the module and the exam being worth 60% of the module.

The essay was on three certainties, and was a 2500 word limit. I found this essay relatively straightforward to do, which I was very happy about.

The exam was two hours long, and we had to answer two questions. There was an essay question, and a problem question. I remember the exam going very well which is good.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I ended up enjoying Equity and Trusts a lot more than I initially thought I would. There were certain topics that I did find rather difficult but I had a brilliant lecturer who explained things so clearly.

And that’s it! Thank you for reading and I will see you soon for another blog post.
