Blogmas: 5 Things Working in Hospitality has Taught Me

Welcome to another blogmas post.

If you don’t know, I have been working in hospitality for nearly 18 months now as a Barista and I have learnt some things along the way. Today, I thought I would share 5 things that working in hospitality has taught me!

Teamwork is so important

Teamwork makes or breaks hospitality shifts. A shift runs smoothly if you and your team work together to the best of everyone’s ability to get things done. This is even more needed when it’s busy. It just makes it so much easier to cope as hospitality can be stressful enough as it is. As the saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work.

Being flexible helps

Hospitality can be so unpredictable at times. Curveballs can be thrown at you before shifts, during your shifts, and after shifts. Being flexible allows you to be more relaxed when these curveballs happen.

Multi-tasking

Hospitality is an extremely busy job to be in. Therefore, you soon learn how to multi-task. Let’s take my job as an example. There are times where I’m having to serve customers on the till, prepare the trays, get cakes and put food in the merry chef all at the same time. Being able to multi-task means that situations like this go far more smoothly. As I’ve found myself in these situations, I’ve definitely learned more about how to multi-task successfully.

Respect

Working in hospitality teaches you a lot about respect. It teaches you about respecting hospitality and retail staff. You realise just how difficult the job is when you are in that job yourself. However, working in hospitality also teaches you about respecting some customers. Working in hospitality is such a people-focused job that involves communication and talking to people. I see customers that become regulars and they start to open up and chat and you end up learning lots of things about them. Of course, some customers can be awful but those regulars stay with you.

I am capable of anything

Being able to work in hospitality means I feel like I can do anything. Hospitality is a tough job with plenty of commitment, resilience and integrity involved. There is so much involved with working in hospitality that when you have a successful shift, you feel like you’ve conquered the world.

And that’s it! Thank you very much for reading and I will see you tomorrow with another blog post!
