2nd Year vs 3rd Year at University

A little while ago, I wrote a blog post about the differences between first year and second year of university. I’ve just started my second semester of my third and final year and I wanted to share the differences I’ve noticed being in third year compared to second year. Let’s get to it!

Much more is expected of you

I thought much more was expected from me in second year compared to first year but third year is a different ballgame. The level of detail and critical analysis expected from you is at a very high standard. I’ve noticed this in my feedback that I’ve had from essays and I’ve noticed this from the questions in exams. For example, in problem questions there are added aspects on the end such as “how would your answer be different if…”? I can’t lie, that threw me the first time I saw that in the exam. It means that revision is so much more vast.

Essays are longer

Similar to the jump from first year to second year, third year assignments are longer. I now have to write 3000 word assignments, which strangely doesn’t feel enough to me. I always go over the count with the 10% leeway. It’s quite frustrating!

There’s more reading to be done

I knew to expect this already but the amount of reading I have to do in third year is quite overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, I do quite like reading but reading case after case is probably similar to how torture feels.

And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you next week for another one.

Beth
