I have been a Barista at a coffee shop for nearly 2 years now. I have learned so much in this role and it is a job I really enjoy. However, like most jobs, there are pros and cons to the role. Today I will share them with you all. Let’s get to it.

The Pros
The kind customers
Being a barista means you encounter customers every day. Some of these customers can be the sweetest of people. We have regulars that give us presents around Christmas time which is always really sweet. You get to know the regulars really well and I like that.
You’re surrounded by coffee
This might be a con to some but I adore coffee. I adore the smell of coffee. I adore drinking coffee. Therefore, this is a massive pro to being a barista. I love the fact that I can make myself a drink as and when and I want one. It’s perfect.
You get to try new drinks
Being a barista means I have been able to try new drinks. If you had told me I would love a flat white, I’d have laughed. It’s absolutely gorgeous. We also get to try any new drinks we are releasing before anyone else does and I really like that.
You can improve a bunch of your skills
Working as a barista has enabled me to develop a lot of skills. I am a lot more patient than I used to be, as things can take time in this role. I can multitask a lot better now, and I feel I communicate better too.
The Cons
In the summer, it is ridiculously busy
As I live in a tourist area, the summer can get ridiculously busy where I work. Therefore, not only do you have regular customers coming in, but also those from holiday parks. It’s actually insane.
It is tiring
Being a barista isn’t just making coffee. It’s also keeping the coffee shop tidy. It’s serving cakes and preparing hot food. It’s making sure that cups, plates and cutlery are clean. Therefore, you’re on your feet a lot during the day. When I worked full-time, it was easy to get used to the pace you had to work at. Now I only work one day at a week and that causes me to ache a lot after a long shift.
Customers can be rude
Like any customer-facing job, you’re going to come across those customers that are rude. I’ve had my fair-share of customers being awful but thankfully, you can have a laugh with your co-workers afterwards.
I should probably say, I do love my job. There are going to be pros and cons to any job you have and I thought I would share that with you all.
And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you soon for another one.
Beth
