Module Breakdown – Housing Policy

Welcome to another module breakdown blog post! So far, I have done 13 posts in this little series on my blog. Essentially, I break down each module and look at it in detail so if you are doing this module, or something very similar, then you know what to expect!

You can find my previous module breakdown posts here:

Year 3 Modules

This module breakdown post is on Housing Policy. Without further ado, let’s get to it!

Content

Housing Policy was a compulsory module in third year for me. It was part of the politics side of my degree.

We looked at various things in this module, mainly concerning housing provisions. This included housing tenures, housing standards, housing finance and housing inequalities. This all took place in the first half of the module before reading week.

In the second half of the module, we focused mainly on social rented housing and housing associations. We looked at providing housing, selecting tenants, managing tenants, homelessness responsibilities, hard-to-let housing, and developing innovative and sustainable social housing for the future.

Lectures

The lectures in this module happened once a week. They were 2 hours long, and were very interactive. This is because the PowerPoints were quite short, and good at generating discussion.

Seminars

Seminars in this module occurred once a week. These were one hour long, and were essentially an extension to our lectures with even more discussion. I found these really interesting.

Assignments

I had two assignments for this module: an essay and an exam.

The essay was 2500 words and we got to pick from a variety of questions concerning topics from the first half of the module. It was worth 50% of the module and was fairly straightforward.

The exam was 2 hours long, and was also worth 50% of the module. Again, we had a variety of questions to choose from which I liked, and these were all to do with topics from the second half of the module.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, this module wasn’t my favourite. Don’t get me wrong, I did find it interesting at times, but I struggled with the assignments due to being used to writing law assignments. Therefore, it’s more my fault than the module itself.

And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you soon for another one!

Beth
