Module Breakdown – Land Law

Welcome to another module breakdown blog post! So far, I have done 14 posts in this little series on my blog. Essentially, I break down each module and look at it in detail so if you are doing this module, or something very similar, then you know what to expect!

You can find my previous module breakdown posts here:

This module breakdown post is on Land Law. Without further ado, let’s get to it!

Content

Land Law was a compulsory module that happened in the second semester of my final year. It is an essential module to take for a qualifying law degree. We looked at how to understand English and Welsh land law, distinguished legal and equitable rights, interests, and registered and unregistered land, and appreciated the development of Land Law in political, social, cultural, and financial contexts.

Lectures

Lectures occurred twice a week for this module, each being two hours long. The structure of the lectures was essentially a topic per lecture. Of course, some topics were a lot bigger than others so we occasionally had to have a couple of lectures per topic, but overall, this was the structure.

We had a main lecturer that covered the majority of the lectures, as well as another lecturer that came in occasionally. Neither of these lecturers taught in an interactive way, as that was saved for our tutorials.

Tutorials

Our tutorials, known as seminars in other universities, were an hour long and roughly happened once a week. We had 8 in total throughout the semester, and these were much more interactive. We had to answer questions and do reading as preparation for these tutorials. We had a different lecturer for these tutorials, which I liked.

Assignments

For Land Law, I had two assignments. These were an essay assignment and an exam. The essay assignment was worth 3000 words, and worth 40% of the overall module. It was a tough assignment in all honesty, with lots of research and preparation involved.

The exam was 2 hours long and worth 60%. Like my other law modules, this was split into two sections. The first section consisted of essay questions similar to what you would get for a summative assignment. The second section consisted of problem questions, which I always enjoy answering.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed land law a lot more than I anticipated. I struggled a lot at the beginning as the course was structured in the sense that the technical aspects were looked at first. Once that was over, I did end up enjoying the module.

And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you soon for another one!

Beth
