Blogmas Day 18: Media Law Module Breakdown

Welcome to another blogmas post and another module breakdown post! So far, I have done 16 posts in this little series on my blog. Essentially, I break down each module and look at it in detail so if you are doing this module, or something very similar, then you know what to expect!

You can find my previous module breakdown posts here:

Year 1 Modules

Year 2 Modules

Year 3 Modules

Today’s post is on Media Law. Let’s get to it!

Content

The content for media law was honestly so fascinating and intriguing to me. We covered a variety of aspects of media law, such as media freedom, confidentiality, privacy, defamation, open justice, reporting restrictions, contempt of court and copyright to name a few. There were also a lot of ethical and sociological aspects to this module, making it really interesting!

Lectures

Lectures occurred twice a week for this module, each being two hours long. These occurred in semester two of my final year. Like family law, these modules were very much like a seminar or a workshop. There was a lot of interaction, with discussions being encouraged. However, there was a fair bit of group work too, which made this slightly different to other modules.

Tutorials

There were no tutorials for this module due to the nature of the lectures.

Assignments

For media law, there were two assignments. These were an essay and an exam.

The essay was worth 40% of the module and was 3000 words. As this was a module for second and third years, our questions were different depending on what year we were in. As a third year, my question was on defamation.

The exam was worth 60% and was 2 hours long. We had to answer two questions. One was an essay question and one was a problem question. Again, the second years had slightly different questions and topics to third years.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I absolutely loved this module. If you saw my ranking my university modules post, you will know this was my favourite module. I loved everything about it, from the lecturer to the content. It was brilliant!

And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you tomorrow for another one!

Beth
