Is it a bit early to get into the spooky season? Absolutely not! Today I’m sharing some horror novels that will keep you up at night. We’ve got a good mix of those that I have personally read and also those that are on my TBR. Let’s get to it!
The Pram – Joe Hill
A husband’s obsessive desire for a child leads to an unexpected manifestation of his yearning in a nightmarish short story about fatherhood dreams.
It Waits in the Woods – Josh Malerman
Brenda Jennings, haunted by an urban legend, seeks answers after her sister’s disappearance in a Michigan forest. 3 years later, she goes into these woods, frightened of what lies in wait.
The Fall of the House of Usher – Edgar Allan Poe
The story follows a narrator’s visit to his childhood friend Roderick Usher, who is suffering from a mysterious illness, and his twin sister Madeline, both of whom are haunted by a hereditary disease and the decaying Usher mansion.
The Haunting of Hill House – Shirley Jackson
The story follows four individuals led by Dr Montague as they stay at the supposedly haunted Hill House, testing for the existence of any ghosts that may be present.
The Turn of the Screw – Henry James
This story follows a governess who whilst caring for two children at a remote country house, becomes convinced that they are haunted.
The Shuddering – Ania Ahlborn
A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting..
Dracula – Bram Stoker
When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes a series of horrific discoveries about his client. Soon afterwards, various bizarre incidents unfold in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby; a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the ‘Master’ and his imminent arrival.
It – Stephen King
The story follows the experiences of seven children terrorised by an evil entity that exploits the fears of its victims to disguise itself while hunting its prey.
And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you soon for another one!
