A Day in the Life of an LLM Student

Welcome to another blog post! In today’s post, I’m going to be sharing a day in the life. I’ve done a couple of these posts before and I really like writing them!

At the time of writing, I’m in the midst of doing my dissertation. Therefore, this day in the life will be mainly focused on making progress with that. Anyway, let’s get to it!

9am

I started my day off by waking at 9am. I’m not a morning person in the slightest. I feel much more productive in the evenings so I am not someone that focuses on getting up early. Hopefully that will change in the future but for now, I’m happy with this.

I scrolled through my phone for a few minutes, checking for any notifications. Yes, I check my phone the minute I wake up. It’s a force of habit for me now. Once I’ve scrolled through my phone and found the energy, I headed downstairs for some breakfast. My go-to breakfast is marmite on toast. Let me know if you’re someone who likes or hates marmite!

I also made myself a cup of tea. I bloody adore tea. I also wanted to share a picture of my mug. Look at it. Isn’t it wonderful?

9:45am

Once I finished my breakfast, I headed upstairs to have a shower and get dressed. This doesn’t take me too long on days where I’m planning on spending the day at home. I don’t bother with makeup or anything like that. I just put on some comfy clothes and that’s me sorted.

10:30am

At 10:30, I started work. As you can see from the picture, I was working on my dissertation. I’ve actually started writing it now which I’m very impressed about. I am the queen of procrastination, particularly with big projects like this. Don’t get me wrong, I will get it done eventually. However, with the due date not until 23rd October, it still doesn’t feel real. Saying that though, this post will be published like 9 days before the due date. Therefore, I should specify I am writing this on 3rd August 2025. Just so you all don’t think I’m cutting it fine.

I thought I would also talk about how I structure my work routine. After trial and error for a few years, the best thing that works for me is working for 20 minutes and taking a 10 minute break. This is based on the Pomodoro Method. That method is based on working for 25 minutes with a 5 minute break. However, that didn’t work for me which is why I’ve adjusted it to a format that is suitable for my needs.

12:30pm

After working for two hours, I had an hour long lunch break. I’m trying to make sure I eat 3 substantial meals a day. Therefore, on this particular day I had a chicken and cheese mayo wrap, some crisps and an apple. I also too this time to have a little chill. I scrolled through my phone and watched a couple of YouTube videos.

1:30pm

After a 1 hour lunch break, I continued to work on my university tasks. I like to switch things up so as not to get too bored. I tend to procrastinate even more if that happens. Therefore, I worked on some summary sheets for different topics related to my degree.

I continued to work on different tasks related to my degree until 5pm, taking regular breaks.

5pm

At 5pm, I stopped work briefly and had dinner. On this particular day, I had Pasta Bolognese and it was honestly incredible.

5:30pm

When I finished dinner, I headed upstairs and continued with work until half past 7. This is the time where I really flourish. I don’t know why, but this is essentially peak time for my productivity. Like I mentioned before, I’m a bit of a night owl so I guess this explains it.

7:30pm

At 7:30pm, I started to essentially move away from working and I got planning for the next day. I got my bullet journal out and filled in my spreads. Of course, I filled out trackers for my habits, mood and sleep, and then I filled in the next day on my weekly spread.

8pm

At 8pm, I wrote in my daily journal. I’ve already written a blog post about how I daily journal and why I’ve done it for so long. After you’ve read this, feel free to check it out! How long this takes can vary day by day. However, on this particular day, not much happened as you can see so it only took about 10 minutes.

8:10pm

After I finished writing, I watched a couple of episodes of a tv show. On this particular day, I was watching Defending Jacob. I really enjoyed this show and I would highly recommend it!

10pm

At 10pm, I started to get ready for bed. I read a few chapters of a book on my Kindle, and then put everything down at half past 10 and went to sleep!

And that’s it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post and I will see you soon for another one!
